punk sub cult

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

The punk subculture emerged in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia in the mid-1970s.

Early punk had an abundance of antecedents and influences, and Jon Savage has described the subculture as a "bricolage" of almost every previous youth culture that existed in the West since the Second World War "stuck together with safety pins".[7] Various philosophical, political, and artistic movements influenced the subculture. In particular, punk drew inspiration from several strains of modern art. Various writers, books, and literary movements were important to the formation of the punk aesthetic. Punk rock has a variety of musical origins both within the rock and roll genre and beyond.

The earliest form of punk rock, named protopunk in retrospect, started as a garage rock revival in the northeastern United States in the late 1960s.[8] The first ongoing music scene that was assigned the punk label appeared in New York City between 1974 and 1976.[9] At about the same time or shortly afterward, a punk scene developed in London.[10] Soon after, Los Angeles[11] These three cities formed the backbone of the burgeoning movement, but there were also other scenes in a number of cities such as BrisbaneBoston.

Around 1977, the subculture began to diversify with the proliferation of factions such as 2 Tone, Oi!, pop punk, New Wave, and No Wave. In the United States during the early 1980s, punk underwent a renaissance in the form of hardcore punk, which sought to do away with the frivolities introduced in the later years of the original movement, while at the same time Britain saw a parallel movement called streetpunk.[12] Hardcore and streetpunk then spread to other regions just as the original subculture had. In the mid-1980s to the early 1990s in America, various underground scenes either directly evolved from punk or at least applied its attitudes to new styles, in the process producing the alternative rock and indie music scenes.[12] A new movement in the United States became visible in the early and mid-1990s that sought to revive the punk movement, doing away with some of the trappings of hardcore.

An officemate of mine said something so true yesterday. Sa blogging, walang apru-approval ang kailangan. Gawin mo lang, tapos, send out na. No red tape. No stupid "para lang may mahirit" comments. And may I add, walang freakin' deadlines, at walang kumukulit na nagfa-follow up.

Haaaay sarap. My little piece of heaven in cyberspace.

lilliput sub cult

When I was a kid, I used to love this cartoon...

It's about the adventures of a guy named Gulliver in Lilliput,
a place full of little people.
One of the cartoon's most memorable characters was this guy...

His name: GLUM.
His most appealing character trait? Well his name says it all - glumness.
Anyway, nothing came out of his mouth but these words...
"WE'RE DOOMED" & "WE'LL NEVER MAKE IT"

Jeez, talk about unbridled pessimism.
And boy did he make an impression on little old me.

Throughout my growing up years,
I kept on hearing Glum's famous words.

Maybe it resonated to all kids my age
because when we got to high school,
we listened to the 80s version of EMO -
dark, pessimistic, sarcastic new wave.

Well, my generation is all grown up now.
In fact we're middle aged or whatever you want to call it.
Pessimism has changed to unbridled optimism.

But somehow, someway, sometimes,
when things don't go our way
at work, while playing sports, in life,
or even about the goings-on in this country,
I still hear the famous words of Glum... faintly...
"We're doomed, we'll never make it."

world of high fashion sub cult

I thought models were just robots.

That is until one stupid movie afternoon
a few years ago I learned about the guy
who dropped magnum on all of us.

Yup, all I know about models and
the glamorous but dog-eat-dog world
of modeling, I learned from this guy...

MODELS HAVE SECRET PATENTED MOVES...
Billy Zane
: When you gonna drop Magnum on us, buddy?
Derek Zoolander: Not yet. You gotta tame the beast before you let it out of its cage.

MODELS HAVE RIVALRIES...
Derek Zoolander: What say we settle this on the runway... Han-Solo?
Hansel: Are you challenging me to a walk-off... Boo-Lander?

MODELS FOLLOW RULES...
David Bowie
: Now, this'll be a straight walk-off, old school rules. First model walks; second model duplicates, then elaborates. Okay, boys - let's go to work!

MODELS HAVE DREAMS...
Derek Zoolander: Well I guess it all started the first time I went through the second grade. I caught my reflection in a spoon while I was eating my cereal, and I remember thinking "wow, you're ridiculously good looking, maybe you could do that for a career."
Matilda: Do what for a career?
Derek Zoolander: Be professionally good looking.

MODELS ARE EMO
...
Larry Zoolander: I just thank the Lord she didn't live to see her son as a mermaid.
Derek Zoolander: Mer-man!
[high-pitched cough]
Derek Zoolander: Mer-man!

MODELS
VALUE BROTHERHOOD/CAMARADERIE...
Derek Zoolander: Rufus, Brint, and Meekus were like brothers to me. And when I say brother, I don't mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think.

MODELS ARE SPIRITUAL...
Derek Zoolander: [looking at the sky] Who am I?
Derek Zoolander: [phone rings] God?

MODELS CAN BE SAD...
Derek Zoolander: If there is anything that this horrible tragedy can teach us, it's that a male model's life is a precious, precious commodity. Just because we have chiseled abs and stunning features, it doesn't mean that we too can't not die in a freak gasoline fight accident.

MODELS CAN BE ANGRY...
Derek Zoolander: What is this? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building?
Mugatu: Derek, this is just a small...
Derek Zoolander: I don't wanna hear your excuses! The building has to be at least... three times bigger than this!

MODELS CAN DESPAIR...
Derek Zoolander:I'm pretty sure there's a lot more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking. And I plan on finding out what that is.

MODELS ARE KINDHEARTED...
Derek Zoolander: So join now, 'cause at the Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too, we teach you that there's more to life than just being really, really, really good looking. Right kids?

flag football sub cult

I used to play this. In fact, I was one of the first few weekend warriors who played pick up Flag Football at the UP Sunken Garden and Ateneo HS fields. I was really enjoying it even if I never scored a touchdown. Then the athletes started coming in... mostly Fil-ams who played the sport while they were in the USA. They weren't just speaking with that American twang, they brought some attitude too. And it sort of became serious. Suddenly there was a league, and there were teams and everyone wanted to win. So I left the game to play Ulitmate Frisbee instead.

And then same thing happened [except for the Fil-am part]. Jeesh. It's a vicious cycle for a try-athlete who just wants to have fun.

hoops + blue eagle + uaap sub cult

My favorite basketball game of all time
[tinalo pati mga astig na NBA and PBA classics]

UAAP 2002 season. Final four game 2 between ATENEO and UE.

[Backgrounder for the memory-disadvantaged... Ateneo was the number 3 seed and won game 1 vs the no.2 Red Warriors of Paul Artadi, James Yap, and Ronald Tubid. If the Blue Eagles win this game, they would face defending champs DLSU in the best of 3 finals. If not, well we fans are used to seasons of frustration so what else is new, right?]

I don't remember exact details but the memories have stuck...

Minutes/seconds before endgame: Ateneo down by 2. After making an error in a previous play, Coach Banal sticks with Gec Chia.

Soon enough, we know why he never left the court. Chia makes a jumpshot to tie the game. 70 all.

Failed UE offensive. Ball goes back to Ateneo.

Last play with less than 5 seconds to go in the game: Enrico Villanueva makes a kalabaw drive to the hoop, realizes he ain't going nowhere, can't be the days hero, does the smart thing... passes back to... you guessed it... Gec Chia.

Chia da man gets da rock [it's what they call a basketball nowadays] past the three point line, dribbles to his right a bit, releases a jumpshot... and then...

NO EXAGG. PARANG SINE. PARANG NAG SLO-MO SA LOOB NG ARANETA COLISEUM.
For a split-second, tahimik... tapos isa pang split-second... SUPERMEGAULTRA-PANDEMONIUM.

Ateneo 72. UE 70. Nag-wild sa court ang mga players/kids. Nag wild din sa stands ang fans. Talon ako ng talon kasama ng pinsan at barkada. Parang kids.

Dramatic diba?! Parang dun palang, alam mo na kung sino ang destined mag-champ. Ibang klase yung feeling nung na shoot niya. At mas wild talaga kung live ka nanonood. Ako, natural high/adrenalin rush. Pero yung kaibigan kong nanood kasama ko... sabi nya nag kick-in ulit yung tinira niyang "stuff" from the night before.

So ayun. Days/a week later, may bagong champion na ang UAAP. Masaya din naman yung 3 games of the finals against DLSU. Pero ito pa rin favorite game of that season... and of all time.

Found a video uploaded by someone else on youtube. If you want to see that shot as well as other bleagle buzzer beaters, check this out

Pre March - "foreplay"
Diaries and journals are out... my officemates were into all sorts of creative things... work was toxic so I wanted to do "something creative" as a form of relaxation/release too... a blog was the best bet, but I couldn't think of a topic...

Early March - "making-out"
My desperation for a blog idea grew when a friend of mine showed me a blog of another friend of mine. Naiinggit ako. So sabi ko, tangena ako rin gusto blumag. But I still lacked a theme.

5th of March - "intercourse & conception"
Was watching a band [band name withheld to protect innocent me from that band's hardcore musicians] in some bar. I was bored. But drunk. I then thought, If I wasn't enjoying this sub culture, then I was... [eureka, for lack of a better enlightening moment word] UNSUBCULTURED.

6th and 7th of March - "pregnancy"
I texted some of my friends about my idea and they said it was good so that weekend, my brain was rolling, lol-ing with all the topics to write about.

8th of March - "delivery"
Finally, quick internet access in the office and my first post was born.

And since then, my mind has been rolling... and lol-ing.

ultimate frisbee + old fart sub cult

[an article I wrote for the PUA website a few years ago... it's timely again as stupid ole me will play in another disc league this summer... stupid... stupid... stupid...]

Old Fart Eye for the Ultimate Guy

[Or how to survive the game we all love when you’re NOT young, fast and athletic]

The sport/game/cult of Ultimate is continually evolving in Manila. “Back in the day” it was played by a small group of expats and a few Pinoy weekend warriors who wanted to sweat and have ultimate fun on Sunday afternoons. Today, whether you like it or not, disc is more competitive – with more athletic types ruling the field. So how does a 36-year old keep up with 20-something legs in every pick up, hat tourney and league game? Read on.

ATTIRE

Of course we all know it’s wise to bring a light and dark shirt. This will keep you from going skins or shirtless - because no one wants to see a flabby tummy bouncing around when you run. It’s also wise to wear a bandana, a visor or a cap in case you are balding. And most important of all, never ever wear short shorts… unless your name is Danny and you play for Sunken Pleasure.

PREGAME

Come about 1-2 hours before start of pick up or a league game. That way you get a chance to throw, warm up, stretch and work up a bit of sweat. This is important because you may go for just 1 point and leave the rest of the afternoon to drinking beer and eating those damn cookies.

But if and when you play…

OFFENSE

Chances are, the person guarding you will be faster. So how do you outwit, outplay and outlast your defender? Simple, take him out of the play by taking yourself out. In other words, get out of the way. Let your faster teammates do the cutting and catching and just give everyone a high five when your team scores.

DEFENSE

Most likely, the person you are assigned to will be quicker than you. So when you get beat, run after him or her like hell. Only two things can happen anyway: [1] you can earn the ire of your teammates [#$^##&$*#, WHO’S ON THAT GUY/GIRL?] or [2] get a cheesy cheer like NICE TRY [now sit your butt down on the sidelines].

Also, when choosing a person to guard, always pick a guy extremely better than you. At least you have an excuse when he when he burns you. Lastly, never ever pick a woman to defend against because we all know how hard it is to chase women.

POSTGAME

Two words. Ben Gay.

EPILOGUE

I’ve been burned by 20-somethings, 30-somethings and women a lot of times. I’ve lost count of how many times the person I am guarding has eluded me and scored. I’ve eaten so much pride while playing disc that I think I’m gaining weight. I have accepted the fact that there will always be someone faster, more talented than I am. But that doesn’t stop me from putting on my cleats any chance I get and try to hold my own against 20-something athletic legs. Hey, I’ve scored, cut and made great plays a lot of times too. Now that we’re done with the basics of playing the game, here comes the harder part - HOW TO SURVIVE PARTIES AND NIGHTS OUT. But that’s another story.
