catholicism + hollywood + folk music + literature sub cult

  • Today is Ash Wednesday. For catholics, it marks the start of Lent, the period where "they" celebrate the passion, death and resurrection of JC. So today, Catholics whether by choice or by robot-like following, will put the ash symbol on the cross on their foreheads. See how religion is like a cult?
  • Ash reminds all catholics that they are dust and to dust they shall return. I get so teary eyed and it makes me wanna sing "dust in the wind... all we are but dust in the wind..." by the Folk/rock/pop group Kansas.
  • This also reminds me of the exchange between Socrates and Bill & Ted in the movie "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure."
Bill: [approaching Socrates] How's it going? I'm Bill, this is Ted. We're from the future. Socrates: Socrates. Ted: [whispering to Bill] Now what? Bill: I dunno. Philosophize with him! Ted: [clears his throat, to Socrates] "All we are is dust in the wind," dude. [Socrates gives them a blank stare] Bill: [scoops up a pile of dust from the basin before them and lets it run out of his hand] Dust. [he blows the remainder away] Bill: Wind. Ted: [points at Socrates] Dude. [Socrates gasps]

  • Ash Wednesday is also the title of an Ethan Hawke book I never finished reading. Yeah, Ethan Hawke, the actor also has a book. Actually, he already has two books. Bet you didn't think unsubcultured didn't know that.
