HONG KONG -- The Pinoy singer who popularized the song “Ang Aking Awitin” has been detained in Hong Kong due to drug trafficking and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In a report on “24 Oras” March 9, Jose Raymundo Gabriel, popularly known in the ’70s as Bong Gabriel, faced the Hong Kong court with an unnamed girlfriend, an overseas Filipino worker (OFW).

On the same report, the Hong Kong court did not consider Gabriel’s motion to file for bail for his temporary release because investigation was still ongoing.

The court still had to reveal the amount of the confiscated illegal drugs.

Gabriel shot to fame in the ’70s and ’80s with his composition “Ang Aking Awitin,” a finalist at the Metro Manila Popular Music Festival in 1979. He also popularized the Gary Granada-penned “Aawitin Ko Na Lang” in 1981.

“Ang Aking Awitin” has also been covered by artists like Side A and Ronnie Liang.

Last month, former Ilocos Sur Representative Ronald Singson was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment due to possession of illegal drugs. The Hong Kong court detained him last year.
