catholicism + old school hollywood sub cult

LENT/HOLY WEEK is that time when your parents or grandparents force feed you with these looooooooong Hollywood epics...

But don't get me wrong... these movies are actually cool. For example, my favorite part in Ben Hur was the Chariot race scene. It was exciting and best of all, violent. Imagine, the participants getting trampled by Chariots and horses. Blood and Gore. Perfect for Holy Week.

What about Ten Commandments? Three things... [1] Who doesn't love BURNING BUSHES huh? [2] Before the IPAD, Moses had a tablet. Too bad it had only one app. It's called TEN COMMANDMENTS. [3] If I can only part the seas, then I could on a roadtrip to Batanes or Mindanao.

One of the perks of "friending" a Hollywood actress [Lesley Ann Brandt of the Spartacus TV series] is getting pics like this on your Facebook inbox. Made my day.

unsubcultured film review: BATTLE LOS ANGELES

Reasons why I give the flick a thumbs down:

[o1] There was no President of the USA character giving an inspiring speech like this one:

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. "Mankind." That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom... Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution... but from annihilation. We are fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day the world declared in one voice: "We will not go quietly into the night!" We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive! Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

[02] There was no cocky, black Air Force Pilot who used to be called The Fresh Prince

[3] Related to that, Vivica Fox isn't in the movie

[4] Michelle Rodriguez plays a tough soldier... AGAIN. C'mon Hollywood, a little imagination please. She's already languishing in typecast hell

[5] I think the aliens came from the same SFX/MAKE UP universe as ID4 and Predator

Some actors who are stuck in typecast hell...

JESSE EISENBERG

MICHAEL CERA
  • Michael Cera and Jesse Eisenberg are so good in playing the geeky-but-cool- boy-next-door character but they need to grow up somehow.
  • Incidentally, they could play geeky-boy-next-door brothers too.

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ
  • Has always played the tough woman role in a lot of movies.
  • I'd like to see her in some sort of a rom com where she does not kick ass.

DANNY TREJO
  • After playing those tough ugly motherfucker roles, Machete made him a tough, ugly lead star for once.
  • I'd like to see him play an ACCOUNTANT who lives in a suburban home, with wholesome kids, a wife a van and a station wagon.

ZACH GALIFIANAKIS
  • Has been seen doing that fat-weirdo-funnyman routine in three movies already - The Hangover, Due Date and It's Kind Of A Funny Story
  • So WHO is funnier... Zach or his beard?

Two films I watched over the weekend... [spoiler alert!!!]

This is weird but after watching the movie at home, I said to myself that I really didn't like it that much. Then hours after, while eating and thinking about the movie, realized that I liked it after all.

This vampire movie has good reviews on the internet. But what appealed to me is how the female vampire chose her next "companion/guardian/sidekick/man friday." She chose loners, outcasts and people being picked on by bullies. The same characteristics of a future serial killer.

So to me, this wasn't just a vampire flick, this was a serial killer flick too.

This wasn't just an action/avert a disaster movie. The way the director did this flick, it also felt like a sports story... specially with all the people cheering at the end. Thoroughly enjoyable.

proof of unsubculturedness and unculturedness...

I'm only interested in the academy award nominee for best film, Black Swan because of the g on g action at around one hour and ten minutes into the film.

In the Name of the Father,
Pete Postlethwaite just left
The Town
for the afterlife [if ever there is one].

When it came to old school character acting,
he was one of The Usual Suspects.

Hollywood will truly be
The Lost World
as they mourn his death.

Because when it came to low key
but powerful roles he was truly

The Last of the Mohicans.

I don't get it.

[Just because Bigelow is Cameron's ex, she wins it?]

quiapo + metrowalk + makati cinema square dvd sub cult

Some of my favorite flicks in random unorderliness...

01. Dazed and Confused
Because the real star of this movie is "Mary Jane"

02. Clerks
Silent Bob is just that, silent... but he stole the show

03. Stand By Me
A real road trip movie without the road [and without the wheels]

04. The Shawshank Redemption
If you can "crawl through a river of shit and come out
clean on the other side,"
then you da man

05. High Fidelity
"What came first, the music or the misery?
"Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
"

P.s. Nauna ito sa 500 Days of Summer [The boy, Tom Hansen of Margate, New Jersey, grew up believing that he'd never truly be happy until the day he met the one. This belief stemmed from early exposure to sad British pop music]

06. A Knight's Tale
This middle age "sports" story truly rocks

07. Amelie
Dysfunctional comedy, le French style

08. Four Weddings and a Funeral
I love Andie Mcdowell

09. The Princess Bride
With a killa line like this, how can you go wrong:
"My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die"

10. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Even if you try to have your memory erased, this awesome film is hard to forget

11. Sideways
It's basically about "WHINE"

12. The Truman Show
Jim Carrey at his best - and he didn't even have to make funny faces

13. Jerry Maguire
Cuba Gooding and his over-acting "co-star" Tom Cruise score a touchdown!

14. Zoolander
For best laugh trip results, watch it when you're "under da influence"

15. 500 Days of Summer
I can watch this 500 times [so far, 6 times pa lang]

16. Garden State
If you love exploring the infinite abyss

17. Lucky Number Slevin
All you want in an awesome movie - gangsters, hot asian chick, revenge, plot twists, killer script, and more

18. Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Sort of a kiddie High Fidelity but it's also good

19. Planet Terror
Why does everything Robert Rodriguez directs turn out to be so cool?
