uaap + hoops sub cult

IF THIS ISN'T SOME SORT OF BASKETBALL record, then I don't know what is...

Sunday. Aug 6. Ateneo vs FEU

THE FACTS:
  • Score: Ateneo leads 51-42 with more than 6 minutes left in the game
  • Ateneo PG Emman Monfort was dribbling the ball down court when he was fouled by Terrence Romeo
  • Romeo gets a technical for "pointing an accusing finger at the ref"
  • Monfort makes both free throws
  • FEU head coach Bert Flores gets pissed with the call... hence another effin T
  • Monfort makes one more free throw. Score to 54-42
  • Ball possession still goes to Ateneo... and Kirk Long hits a three pt. shot. 57-42
  • At the exact moment, FEU's Escoto was caught with unsportsmanlike foul on Greg Slaughter.
  • FEU gets another effin T and Slaughter makes both free throws. 59-42
  • Of course Ateneo gets ball possession once more... and Long hits another killa 3 [get this: from the same sweet spot] 62-42
THE "RECORD" RESULT
  • 11 points in 19 seconds
  • 11 points in what seemed like one possession
Only in the Pines. Only in the UAAP. Only by the Arrreneow Blue Eagles! [of course all the non-Blue Eagles fans now think that all the games are rigged in favor of Ateneo]

uaap sub cult

The UP Fighting Maroons. Last year's whipping boys. They never won a game last UAAP season. So naturally, everyone rejoiced in a championship sort of way when they won their first game in UAAP season 74. Alumni quipped that they have reached their quota for wins. OR SO THEY THOUGHT.

Yesterday, this Fighting Maroon team pulled off what could probably be the upset of the year as they killed championship contender FEU on all fronts - d, offense, rebounding and hustle. They even did it by 13 points.

YOU KNOW WHAT'S IRONIC? While watching the game with my UP officemates, I think I was the only one [a Blue Eagle fan at that ] who actually believed that UP would pull off the win. They were all jaded. They thought their team would crumble in the end game as usual. I guess this was true of every UP alumni I am friends with.

I may be unsubcultured on/about many things but not hoops. While watching the replay, I realized this was a whole new Maroon team. They played more fluidly and had more plays as compared to past UP teams.

Even found this game more exciting/interesting than the second game which featured my Blue Eagle team vs UST. BORRRRRING.

this referee call can only happen in Philippine hoops [the UAAP in particular]...

So a player gets called a violation or a foul by the referee.

The player reacts to it.

He gets a reprimand from the referee.

The announcer says "WARNING ON [NAME OF PLAYER] FOR RESENTMENT OF A CALL."

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... only in my country dude!

the unsubcultured guide to watching the uaap + blue eagle sub cult

My favorite basketball league is back. The question is, will my team, the Arrrreneow Blue Eagles win their 4th straight? It will be tough. They lost key man Ryan Buenafe to rumor-mongering.

First you gotta have tickets. Scalpers? They're out there. Or you can do it the legal way... line -up at the ticket counter. Luckily for me, I have connections [which makes me subcultured]

Anyway, here are pics of the two games I watched yesterday.

The 1st game was between our arch-rival DLSU Green Archers vs the FEU Tamaraws. The latter won over the former. Here are the archers singing their school song. It's tradition that the schools sing their alma mater song at the end of the game [with the winning school first.

Here's the DLSU team. I hate them [but only during the UAAP season].

Now onto the next game... Ateneo Blue Eagles vs Adamson Falcons ... blue and white vs blue and white... birdy vs birdy. It's halftime so Ateneo's Blue Babble Battalion strut their stuff. It's also tradition that the schools' pep squads perform at halftime, when most of the fans are smoking, buying drinks, socializing, smoking, etc.

I didn't have game pics. But here's the endgame, where again, it's tradition to shake hands with each other for sportsmanship sake. Yep, it was an ugly game. In fact I'll call it an ugly game of epic proportions. But at least my team won.

Here's a blurred shot of my co-fans singing our alma mater song.

Game thoughts...
  • Our second unit needs offense.
  • Ryan Buenafe is truly a big miss.
  • I think every Ateneo game will be close.
  • It will be hard. Ateneo needs to be epic to win the 4th championship. Good luck boys.

blue eagle sub cult

Even if the team lost 3 key players for controversial reasons [and a 4th player now is under scrutiny by jealous members of the uaap board], I am not scared. This will only make the 4peat even sweeter!

blue eagle + hoops + uaap sub cult

I'm ready for the upcoming UAAP season. With or without Ryan Buenafe [who is currently residing in rumor hell], we can do this shit.

blue eagle hoops sub cult

The name is Kiefer Ravena. He could help my favorite team win championship after championship. And when he graduates, he could be multi-titled in the pros too!

blue eagle + uaap hoops sub cult

It's going to be 5 years of fun ball... Kiefer Ravena is going to play for the Blue Eagles and not some Div1 NCAA school in the states or worse, to some other UAAP school. Excited to see him take over a game. Best thing about it that he's HOMEGROWN.
