high school sub cult

High school class photos circa the 80s. One is probably sophomore or junior year. The other is senior year. Can you spot the unsubcultured teenybopper?

unsubcultured 80s question...

Whatever happened to Phoebe Cates?

Galing sa sineng Fast Times At Ridgemont High

P.S.

Was watching an 80s movie starring her last night and I realized, di pala siya marunong umacting. Puro pa-kyut lang. Pero nung time na yon, shemps, ok lang sa atin yun di ba? Eto yung movie niya...

windsurfing sub cult

True to my try-athlete nature, I tried Windsurfing a few years back.

Now I can also call myself a WINDPOSER.

modern day lingo sub cult

I know a lot of people who say this phrase... "I KNOW, RIGHT?!"

What's my point? Soon enough, those words will max out on the irritability scale.

Do you agree? I know, right?!

sculpture sub cult

Given to me by a sculptor friend [sneakers my addition]. This art unsubcultured person got a brief taste of the art sub culture by dropping by the studio/gallery where my friend worked and also attending two exhibit openings.

lomo sub cult

I used to have a Diana camera like this one...

But I never got the hang of it. Here are some of the pics that came out from my first roll...

Relatively sucky compared to the Diana pics I've seen on the web. But that's how you roll with a Lomo... ugly is supposed to be beautiful... sometimes. So I gave up on Diana and I bought myself a Fisheye.

drugs + brit movies + brit books sub cult

Diba usually mas maganda ang libro sa sine. So dati, pagkatapos ko panoorin ang sineng "Trainspotting," sabi ko cool 'tong palabas na ito ah... tungkol sa mga adik. Baka trip din yung libro...

Ayun, sa madaling sabi, first page palang give up na ako. Paano, it was written in the way the Scottish or maybe Brits speak English... with an accent that is alien to us.

music sub cult

Unsubcultured music-love history.

I listen to rock, alternative, pop, electronica, a bit of hiphop/rnb, some reggae and ska and a bit of jazz. Relatively a wide selection. But that wasn't the case when I was growing up. Here's what went down over the "decades."

Grade school years: Lived in Baguio. I hung out with my long-haired, refugee from the hippie movement brothers. Boy, did they listened to a lot of jazz... George Benson, Herbie Hancock, The Crusaders, Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gyra, Al Jarreau, Astrud Gilberto, Manhattan Transfer, Michael Franks, Seawind, Ronnie Laws, Stanley Clarke, George Duke and a whole lot more. So because I looked up to my bros, I was into their music too. [Fast forward to workplace setting: found out I had many officemates who grew up just like me, listening to their brother's jazz albums].

High school years: Lived in Manila. Stepped out of my brothers' shadows and stepped into that of my high school friends'. Dropped the jazz thing and listened to what my friends were into: 99.5 pop music and of course, the music of that generation - new wave [the 80s answer to emo]. I listened to dark, brooding shit from Brit artists and of course, you sort of get influenced by their angstiness too.

College years: New wave wouldn't leave my ears but at least it changed it's name to "alternative." If I remember everything correctly, I was just exclusively listening to alt rock. I guess my mind wasn't yet open to the great world of sound at the time.

Early working years: Finally opened my world to the possibilities of other genres. Aside from alternative, I listened to pop [Rick Astley hahaha], dance/hiphop [Bobby Brown, Snap], funk powered rock [Red Hot Chili Peppers], glam metal and acid jazz. This was also the time whenPinoy alternative rock and pop really kicked ass.

The MP3/Ipod years: Thanks to downloading and ripping, I have almost all the music I want. New wave, pop, alternative, jazz, a bit of hiphop... they're all neighbors inside my Ipod. Thanks to other music loving individuals [and also because of the movies], I also get to appreciate the awesome music of artists that existed before I was born... like for example The Beatles. Plus this... growing up, I never really listened to rock. But now, bands and artists like Rush, Hendrix, Blind Faith and Yes are a regular part of my playlist.

So that's it... as I grew older, my world of beats got bigger too. I can now listen to almost anything... except blues, world music, country, trance, house and Celine Dion.

pinoy movie bandido sub cult

Max Alavarado, Paquito Diaz, Romy Diaz and Dick Israel... sila ang mga malupit na kontrabida ng sineng noypi.

They loot, murder, rape, pillage and make life a little harder for our bida and his hot leading lady. Kung wala sila, ang baduy ng action movies natin!

At wala tayong papagtawanan at gagayahin kapag nag-iinuman tayo.

pinoy-chinese sub cult

A few pics I took during Kung Hei Fat Choi day in Chi-town early this year.

Be sure the dragon doesn't steal all yo jewelry.

Drumming away the bad spirits. Then why am I still here?

Akala ko castanas ang uso dito?

Even workhorses need to chill.

Lucky stuff... worship stuff. What do I know, I am unsubcultured.

pill popping sub cult

I am well entrenched into this pill-popping sub culture.

Here's what I pop everyday:

1] Multivitamin
2] Ascorbic acid
3] Pill for h blood
4] Another pill for h blood
5] Pill for gout
6] Another pill for gout

To quote a certain crazy dude caught on camera by a news crew... " I buy my drugs from the Mercury Drugs..."

french/france sub cult

The one and only French phrase I know is...

Voulez vous coucher avec moi ce soir? [Want to sleep with me tonight?]

And I first learned it from this 1980-something movie...

18 more days and I turn a year older.

My body is beginning to feel my age.

But my mind isn't.
