rizalista + francism style opm sub cult
90s. Nasa advertising pako nun. My agency was pitching for a bank.
My boss asked me to write a song as part of the pitch and the campaign.
Wrote the jingle all night... didn't sleep.
The words came together at around 6am.
Long story short... we won the pitch.
The song I wrote was part of the pitch.
And the song was commissioned to FrancisM.
He revised the words a bit to fit his style... and he made the music.
The song: Idol Ko Si Rizal for RCBC.
Pang-commercial nga lang ang airplay sa radyo. At hindi umabot sa album niya.
Pero one of the proudest damn moments of my life.
Here's a link to that song... http://gabogabster.multiply.com/music/item/1/Lyrics_by_Gab
Idol ko si Rizal
May kuwento ako sa inyo
mga 'tol, wooh
Kuwento ng isang bayaning Pinoy, hoy
Makinig ka, dinggin
Jose ang kanyang pangalan
At nang siya'y barilin sa Bagumbayan
Nagising sa katotohanan ang ating bayan
Malaya, 'di alipin
Mapayapa't 'di marahas
Kalayaan daw ay walang katumbas
Matapang, 'di duwag
Bayani't may dangal
Panulat ang pinairal ni Gat Jose Rizal
Kadugo, kakulay
kayumangging katulad ko
Idol ko si Rizal
si Rizal ang idol ko (x3)
Talino ang sandata nitong makata
Pintor, doktor at guro ng mga bata
Nasa Noli at nasa Fili
lumaban siya hanggang sa huli
Nasa Noli at nasa Fili
lumaban siya
Kaibigan, kapatid,
kababayan nating lahat
Idol ko si Rizal
si Rizal ang idol ko (x3)
Sana ako
Sana tayo
Tularan ng ating mundo
Tunay na bayani ang taong ito
Lumingon sa pinanggalingan
tumingin sa paparoonan
Mga bagong bayani ng ating bayan
Kadugo't kakulay
kayumanggi, kaibigan
Kapatid at gabay
Bayani ang titulo
Idol ko si Rizal
si Rizal ang idol ko
Idol ko si Jose
kasi siya'y bayani
Idol ko si Rizal
pinoy humor + hollywood movie myths sub cult

The movie "Gremlins" was not a big hit like, say, Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean or Superman but it has a significant, invaluable contribution to Pinoy pop culture [gasgas na gasgas wisecracks category].
For an example, check out this everyday conversation between two Pinoys...
Person 1: Bad trip, umuulan nanaman!
Person 2: Paano tayo makakasplit dito. Dapat nagdala ako ng payong... buwiset!!!
Person 1: Takbuhin nalang natin. Tara na.
Person 2: HUWAG, MABABASA KA... BAKA DUMAMI KA!
For all of you who don't know the story of Gremlins here's one from IMDB...
THERE YOU HAVE IT. DON'T EVER GET HIM WET BECAUSE WHEN A MAGWIE TURNS INTO AN UGLY FEROCIOUS GREMLIN AND GETS WET, THE THING MULTIPLIES.
SO NEVER EVER BRAVE THE RAIN, DIVE INTO A POOL, TAKE A SHOWER. ETC.
BECAUSE YOU DON'T WANNA HEAR ANOTHER OVER-USED WISECRACK LIKE THIS: BAKA DUMAMI KA!!!

Given to me by a sculptor friend [sneakers my addition]. This art unsubcultured person got a brief taste of the art sub culture by dropping by the studio/gallery where my friend worked and also attending two exhibit openings.

But I never got the hang of it. Here are some of the pics that came out from my first roll...
Relatively sucky compared to the Diana pics I've seen on the web. But that's how you roll with a Lomo... ugly is supposed to be beautiful... sometimes. So I gave up on Diana and I bought myself a Fisheye.

Ayun, sa madaling sabi, first page palang give up na ako. Paano, it was written in the way the Scottish or maybe Brits speak English... with an accent that is alien to us.

music sub cult

Grade school years: Lived in Baguio. I hung out with my long-haired, refugee from the hippie movement brothers. Boy, did they listened to a lot of jazz... George Benson, Herbie Hancock, The Crusaders, Chuck Mangione, Spyro Gyra, Al Jarreau, Astrud Gilberto, Manhattan Transfer, Michael Franks, Seawind, Ronnie Laws, Stanley Clarke, George Duke and a whole lot more. So because I looked up to my bros, I was into their music too. [Fast forward to workplace setting: found out I had many officemates who grew up just like me, listening to their brother's jazz albums].

High school years: Lived in Manila. Stepped out of my brothers' shadows and stepped into that of my high school friends'. Dropped the jazz thing and listened to what my friends were into: 99.5 pop music and of course, the music of that generation - new wave [the 80s answer to emo]. I listened to dark, brooding shit from Brit artists and of course, you sort of get influenced by their angstiness too.

College years: New wave wouldn't leave my ears but at least it changed it's name to "alternative." If I remember everything correctly, I was just exclusively listening to alt rock. I guess my mind wasn't yet open to the great world of sound at the time.

Early working years: Finally opened my world to the possibilities of other genres. Aside from alternative, I listened to pop [Rick Astley hahaha], dance/hiphop [Bobby Brown, Snap], funk powered rock [Red Hot Chili Peppers], glam metal and acid jazz. This was also the time whenPinoy alternative rock and pop really kicked ass.

The MP3/Ipod years: Thanks to downloading and ripping, I have almost all the music I want. New wave, pop, alternative, jazz, a bit of hiphop... they're all neighbors inside my Ipod. Thanks to other music loving individuals [and also because of the movies], I also get to appreciate the awesome music of artists that existed before I was born... like for example The Beatles. Plus this... growing up, I never really listened to rock. But now, bands and artists like Rush, Hendrix, Blind Faith and Yes are a regular part of my playlist.
So that's it... as I grew older, my world of beats got bigger too. I can now listen to almost anything... except blues, world music, country, trance, house and Celine Dion.

At wala tayong papagtawanan at gagayahin kapag nag-iinuman tayo.
